Independent media is under threat in Myanmar

The people of Myanmar are in desperate need of independent media. The military junta that has seized power is cracking down on dissent, and journalists are being arrested, tortured, and killed. Mizzima Media is one of the few independent media outlets still operating in Myanmar, and they are risking their lives to bring the truth to the people. Your donation will help Mizzima Media continue their important work.

About Mizzima

The year 1998 found Mizzima’s co-founders, Soe Myint and Thin Thin Aung, living in Delhi, India. It was at this time that they decided to start an Internet news service which would specialize in Myanmar related news. They called it Mizzima, which is a Pali word meant to symbolize middle or moderate, and in the sense of media to convey the founders’ vow to be objective and professional in their commitment to supporting the Burmese movement for democracy.

Mizzima was established in 1998 in New Delhi, India, by veterans of Myanmar’s 1988 pro-democracy uprising. Following 15 years as a non-profit exile-based media group, Mizzima, in March 2012, became the first exile Myanmar media group to officially relocate and register as a private entity in Myanmar. As a component of Myanmar’s domestic media landscape, Mizzima rose to become one of the top three independent media houses in Myanmar. On the heels of the 1 February 2021 coup, Mizzima was banned from officially operating inside Myanmar and was again forced to adopt a mode of operations reliant on an exile presence to support clandestine activities inside Myanmar.

Mizzima today is recognized as the most accessed and trusted source of news for the people of Myanmar. Mizzima boasts over 21 million followers of our main Facebook page in addition to a digital daily newspaper in Burmese, Mizzima App, weekly English language magazine, and FM and shortwave radio broadcasting. In addition to the approximately 32 million people reached via Mizzima TV and Radio broadcasting, the following table summarizes the outreach of various Mizzima digital and online platforms:
